I had planned to be here today talking about cute koala printables and a fun Frankenstein applique pattern, but I’ve spent the last few days watching the horrific news out of North Carolina and trying to find out what’s happening to my friends in the area.
Thank you Wendy! Our son and his wife live in West Asheville. They and their friends are safe and their home have no damage. A neighbor is running extention cords from their house to our son's. We talked to our son today. He said they are keeping just the fridge running, thanks to their neighbor. People are working together in Western North Carolina and starting to dig out. There is a huge need.
My niece and her husband moved to Apex NC (outside Raleigh NC) a year ago to be near their son in their elder years. Hope all is well with them. Can't get through to them by email, cell phone or text.
I'll contribute to Samaritan's Purse today. They are an excellent organization.
I finally got an email from my niece this afternoon. All is well with them. The pond behind their house became a river, but didn't flow up to their house.
Posting an update here. I heard back from a few friends this morning. They are all well, but things are bad. Everyone with a chainsaw has been siphoning gas from cars and clearing downed trees from the roads. One neighbor has a generator and has been sharing it with others. Once they got a few miles of road cleared they met up with people clearing from other directions. A truck loaded every available gas container from everyone in the area and drove to Johnson City, TN to fill them so they could continue to run chainsaws and the generator. They were able to text from Johnson City, but there's still no cell service in Mitchell County. They're estimating 4-6 weeks for power to be restored. Food isn't an immediate issue because nobody's fridge or freezer is running and the food needs to be eaten, but water is going to be a major problem until power is restored to people with wells. Some of the water treatment facilities have been completely destroyed and will need a complete rebuild - not just repairs.
Wendi, my son made it out the morning of the flood. He was visiting his uncle in Lake Lure, and they all left quickly. Thankfully. Hours later the road were goon. Everyone in Lake Lure is stranded, still.
I have a brother living in NW SC. He and his wife both have Covid, and they have been without power since the storm hit. Tough ride, but we all agree that no power is so much better than no home, no life. VERY grateful that they are safe despite the challenges.
Thank you for remembering us and posting this. I live in Clyde which is about 22 miles west of Asheville and was it was devastated by the Pigeon River. So much destruction and Asheville and Swannanoa are even worse. Also Fairview and Black Mountain along with other nearby mountain towns. It’s heartbreaking. I just got power and water back yesterday. Internet and cell service is still poor and sporadic. I’m much better off than others. Thank you for thinking of us.
